Mercedes in chase crash that killed driver and seriously injured girls in Mini

Police say traffic officers began pursuing a Mercedes S320 after it made off at speed from Manchester city centre shortly before 3.30am on Sunday.

A minute into the chase the Mercedes collided with a Mini at a set of traffic lights at Chester Road’s junction with Warwick Road in Old Trafford , near Manchester United’s stadium and The Trafford pub, and then hit a barrier.

The 24-year-old driver of the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene. Two female passengers in the Mini, aged 19 and 22, were taken to hospital. The 19-year-old woman suffered fractured ribs and the 22-year-old suffered serious injuries including multiple broken bones - she is in a serious condition. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
