David Hanson MP, Labour's Shadow Home Office Minister, said: "At a time when metal theft shows signs of getting out of control, this Government refuses to act and has opposed legislation to tackle this dangerous crime.
The decision to block Labour MP Graham Jones’ important Bill proves that the Government is unwilling to take the urgent action required to deal with metal theft.
Transport chiefs are reviewing plans to replace the 32 older blue-and-grey trams still running on the Greater Manchester Metrolink network after they broke down four times in the last fortnight.
Coun Roger Jones, a vice-chairman of the TfGM Committee, said: “The biggest culprit is the older trams. They’re breaking down too often. Most are over 20 years old. We’ve got a commitment to replace 12 of them. It’s only when we get rid of the old ones that we’ll have a system that’s really efficient.”
