Campaigners lose battle over Pocket Park on Station Road

A four year battle to save a pocket park opposite Trafford Park Station has been lost after developers won their appeal against planning refusal.

Councillor Mike Cordingley said it was sad that residents were losing a valued patch of green in such a densely populated area. "I still have concerns over these apartments even though the designs are much improved from the ones they started with. It's devastating that we won't see the summer blackberry harvesting, or hear the birdsong along here again. It's often patches like this piece of scrub that do as much for wellbeing in neighbourhoods as any amount of National Trust stately homes, and they are no less worthy of preservation."

The works for the Lidl supermarket are submitted to planning. Application 92714/FUL/17 Consultation End Date 7th December.

Broadly in support of this application. I am keen to get reassurance that they won't impact on the Ravenswood Rest space that Gorgeous Gorse Hill have so lovingly brought back to life. Also want to anticipate crossover between Tesco and Lidl - safe crossing and trolley management but Lidl have so far seemed open to talk.

Consultation end date 11th December.

I have worries about this application. We must be close to saturation point for takeaways along this parade - that might not be a planning consideration, but it is a genuine worry. There is the obvious crime and anti social behaviour aspect but also waste disposal and drainage. The pavement is no longer a pavement.

Speculation on what the Glazers could be doing

Manchester United owners the Glazer family have been steadily buying up land around Old Trafford since taking ownership of the club in 2005.

At a cost of millions of pounds, the Americans have carried out a sustained and targeted campaign to take control of surrounding real estate, which could provide future development opportunities.

The Manchester Evening News Sports team have speculated that while a move away from the Theatre of Dreams would be controversial, they do have the room to rebuild a state of the art stadium on the same site in the manner of Spurs, with fewer constraints.

Stockport College and Trafford College to Merge

Trafford College and Stockport College have announced plans to merge. There will be a short consultation.

Both colleges will keep their existing names and campuses, with Stockport on Wellington Road South, and Trafford on Manchester Road, Timperley.

The merger is seen as making them both more sustainable.

There is a credible argument that encouraging bike use to Dutch or Danish levels could do more than perhaps any other single intervention to save the NHS from collapse. It could even greatly mitigate the crisis in adult social care.

Lidl to open new store in Gorse Hill

Lidl has announced plans for a new store in Stretford. The supermarket will be placed at the former PC World unit in Chester Road.

The multi-million pound investment, will see Lidl commit to building a sustainable 1,363m² store with plans to create up to 40 new jobs. The store will include state of the art facilities such as: an in-store bakery, longer-style tills with dual packing facilities, customer toilets and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.

Ombudsman Confirms increase in bin complaints upheld

The outsourcing of waste collections by councils in England has led to an increase in the number of complaints being upheld by the ombudsman, a new report has warned today. The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (LGO) said it upheld 81% of complaints made about waste and recycling services last year.

Crime Map for Gorse Hill Ward showed increase in May

The latest crime statistics published by Greater Manchester Police show an increase in the Longford West area covering our ward. 118 crimes were reported to the police in May 2017. Councillor Mike Cordingley said "Clearly it's a somewhat worrying figure and we will be monitoring. We meet regularly with the police. We know they're stretched due to Government Cuts. The message has to be 'be vigilent, make sure your property is secure and report it.
Longford West covers Lostock and Gorse Hill and is coterminous with the residential area of Gorse Hill Ward.

Tesco to shut its Stretford Mall Store

Tesco is to close its store in the Stretford Mall - putting scores of jobs at risk.

The supermarket giant says it has made the bombshell decision because of poor trading figures.

Tesco’s regional director North and Northern Ireland, Jonathan Taylor, said, “Our priority now is to explain what this announcement means for our colleagues and wherever possible, offer them alternative roles with Tesco.
